Beulah Church History
The history of the Beulah Church of God in Christ Jesus, Inc. finds its origin in the servant of God named Bishop Peter J. F. Bridgers. To appreciate this church and the path the saints have trodden would be impossible without him.
Mariah Roland net and married Reddrick Bridgers and to his union were born seven girls and two boys. Peter Bridgers was born on September 26, 1890 in Washington, North Carolina.
As a youngster he attended the Methodist Church in Washington, NC with his family. He also received his basic elementary education in that town. In 1913, he met and married Bessie Johnson while he was still located in North Carolina. At the marriage ceremony, his child-hood friend, Bishop Frank Clemmons, the State Bishop of New York for The Churches of God In Christ, and the pastor of First Church of God in Christ was his best man at the wedding. Peter Bridgers begat one son, Nathaniel, presently residing in Los Angeles, California and one daughter, Lutricia Harvey, presently residing in Brooklyn, NY and she is a member of the Beulah Church.
While still in North Carolina, he used to steal away from the Methodist Church and go around the corner to the sanctified church. When the Methodist Church built a new building and made plans to march in, Peter Bridgers decided that he wanted to be a part of the sanctified church rather than continue fellowship in his mother’s church. He gave his heart to the Lord and received the Holy Ghost before he came to New York City. Early in his youth God called him to preach while he was still in North Carolina.
After arriving in New York City, he pursued his calling and began to teach and preach the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was affiliated with the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World at one time and respected and admired Bishop G.T. Haywood. Bishop Haywood baptized Bishop Bridgers in the name of Jesus Christ. While he was in Columbus, Ohio, Bishop Bridgers met Bishop R.C. Lawson and encouraged him to come to New York. At one time, they both attended Pastor Lightford’s church.
Bishop Bridgers was a member of the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ, Inc and served as national evangelist and traveled and preached throughout the United States. At one time, he was sent Coney Island to Pastor that church. The church was named Beulah Church and still exists until this day.
In 1938, he opened Beulah Church at 110 Macon Street, Brooklyn, NY. The little church began to grow and grow and soon there was need for more space. One day while passing by 956 Marcy Avenue, he observed that this old movie house was closed. He stopped at the building, put his hand on the door and asked God in prayer, for the building. The Lord let him have the building, which houses our edifice to this very day.
In April 1944, Beulah Church marched around the corner to its new edifice. This small acorn continued to grow and prosper. By 1951 we had made our last mortgage payment. We had a big celebration service to note this event and burnt the mortgage. Bishop R.C. Lawson was speaker for the evening and the Brotherhood Choir of Refuge Temple sang on that day.
In 1944, Bishop Bridgers separated himself from the COOLJC and became one of the Bishops in the organization called The Rehoboth Churches of Christ, Inc. The organization was headed by Bishop Randolph Carr, who was the Pastor of Rehoboth in Baltimore, MD. Bishop Peter Bridgers was the Diocesan Bishop of the Eastern Region of the United States. This took in all churches located in New York, Delaware, Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
Bishop Bridgers was a dynamic preacher and also a wise realtor. He was committed family man and succourer (securer?) of the Saints. He saw to it that his wife, children, nieces and nephews had homes and that the Saints had a nice place to live in.
During his lifetime, he told us that people would be coming to Beulah Church from the North, South, East and the West. We have lived to see this prophesy come to pass! When Pastor Bridgers closed his eyes, he left a debt-free church in the hands of God. Bishop Carr preached at the home-going service of Bishop Bridgers.
Mother Bessie Bridgers was a great woman of God. She held us together during the adjustment period. She was a prayer warrior indeed.
There were a series of Pastors after Bishop Bridger’s death:
Elder Edward Payne - 1962-1964
Elder Edward Williams - 1965 – 1968
Bishop John H. Johnson - 1968-1971
During the period of time after Bishop Johnson left, Elder Eugene Bryant and Elder John Lewis would come over to minister to us on a regular basis. Bishop Wilbur L. Jones Sr. and Elder Dobbs came and preached for us on every other Sunday for an entire year. During that period of time we fasted and prayed that God would send us a man of God who would lead us on to victory. Mother Bridgers told us that God was going to send us a young man, and so He did. God sent us a man of God and that man was none other than BISHOP WILBUR L.JONES. TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
